For your open water certification its around 400 dollars depending on where you are and what shops you go through, look around they don't all have the same prices. And for gear, you don't need to get your own, you can rent your gear from a local shop, whatever works for your price range, if you do want to get gear start with the basics.
A BCD, A regulator, some fins and a mask. I rent tanks, always have and probably always will. There are a lot of little accessoriess that you can get, but yodon'tnt really need.
Browse around this site, it has a lot of good information about scuba diving-

Best of luck, its a really fun sport to get into.

You will need your own personal gear... mask, snorkel, fins, boots, and gloves.

Things like knives, safety sausage, computers, and other accessories are optional. I recommend getting them later, when you have a few dives logged and have tried a few different BC's. By then you will have a better idea what you really want.

BC's, tanks, and regulators should be supplied as part of the class.
